A checksum is a sequence of numbers and letters used to check data for errors. If the checksum of an original file is known, an algorithm can be used to confirm that a copy is identical. The eCTD requires the inclusion of an MD5 checksum (a specific algorithm) for each submitted file for each file referenced in the XML backbone.
